Saugus, Massachusetts was settled by English colonists in 1629 and named after an Algonquian word meaning "extended" or "small outlet." Originally part of a larger region that included Lynn, Saugus became its own town in 1815. The most significant chapter in Saugus's early history came with the establishment of the Saugus Iron Works in 1646. This facility was among the first integrated ironworks in North America and represented a major industrial undertaking for the colonial period.

Today, the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, maintained by the National Park Service, preserves the first sustained and integrated iron works in North America, known as the "birthplace of the American iron and steel industry," and showcases 17th-century manufacturing.

In the 19th century, the Saugus River powered various manufacturing industries, including tobacco, shoemaking, and chocolate. By the 20th century, Saugus shifted from manufacturing to commerce, with Route 1 becoming the economic core. Originally the Newburyport Turnpike, Route 1 was improved in the 1930s and attracted businesses like restaurants and retail stores from the 1950s onward.
