Peabody, Massachusetts, was founded in 1626 and originally called Northfields, Salem Farms, or Brooksby. Incorporated as a town in 1855, it became Peabody in 1868, named after George Peabody. Early settlers farmed the mostly wild land of meadows, swamps, and rivers.

By the mid-1800s, Peabody developed into an industrial hub, especially known for its tanneries and glassmaking. Dubbed “The Leather City,” Peabody supplied leather goods throughout the region. Innovations like the steam boiler which replaced water power and the railroad enabled growth. And by 1919, over 90 leather factories operated there, producing millions of hides each year.

By the 1970s, most tanneries had closed or moved overseas due to competition and stricter environmental laws. Since then, Peabody has become a diverse North Shore center focused on retail (notably the Northshore Mall), healthcare, and light manufacturing/technology, taking advantage of its location near Boston and major transit routes. In 2022, the North Shore Children’s Museum opened in a renovated bank and quickly became a popular attraction for hands-on arts experiences. The Peabody Economic Development Committee, a part of the Chamber of Commerce, supports site location and job creation by collaborating with public and private partners.
