Incorporated in 1766, Northborough, Massachusetts has grown steadily over 250 years. The opening of the Worcester Turnpike (Route 20) in the early 19th century and the arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s boosted the town's economy. Northborough was a significant center for shoe manufacturing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks to water from the Assabet River.

 

Today, Northborough is a desirable residential area with a high percentage of homes compared to commercial buildings. The 2020 Master Plan formalizes plans to keep the community the most desirable of places to live in the region.
