Shortly after its founding as a precinct of Dedham, Needham requested to be separated and was granted the right to form its own town. The city was incorporated in 1711, making it one of the later communities to do so in eastern Massachusetts.

 

Early residents primarily engaged in agriculture along with some winter lumbering, orchards, and tanneries in the 1700s. By the middle of the 18th century, saw and grist mills were opened along the Charles River. The expansion of rail systems and land speculation increased settlement, leading to growth in industrial enterprises and manufacturing during the mid-19th century.

 

In the early 1900s, Needham remained mainly an agricultural community, but the expansion of transportation infrastructure, including trains and automobiles connecting it to Boston, facilitated residential and commercial growth. By mid-century, the town experienced an increase in manufacturing and business activity, particularly in industries such as textiles and technology. The development of the adjacent Route 128 corridor contributed to Needham’s growth.

 

By the late 20th century, Needham had developed into a hub for technology and business, setting the stage for continued economic growth into the 21st century. The Needham Council of Economic Advisors has an integral role in the modern town economy.
