Natick, Massachusetts was incorporated in 1781, which is 130 years after its original settlement. In the 18th century, similar to other colonies and eventual states, Natick was primarily an agricultural community with farming and small-scale trade being central to its economy.

 

In the 19th century, Natick transitioned into a manufacturing hub, particularly in shoe production due to the invention of the sewing machine. By the 1830s, the town had developed a significant shoe industry, becoming known for work boots and high ankle boots preferred by the military at the time. The arrival and expansion of the railroad in the mid-1800s facilitated the transportation of goods, positioning Natick as a major player in the national shoe market. By 1880, Natick ranked third in the nation for shoe production.

 

While shoe manufacturing remained strong into the early 20th century, demand began to decline, leading to the closure of the last shoe company in Natick in 1971. The town diversified its economy, becoming noted for baseball production, pioneering the figure-eight stitching method used in professional league baseballs. Other industries, such as bottling plants, car manufacturing, and saw production, also contributed to the economic growth of the town.
