Milton was initially settled as a village in 1640 and became the independent Town of Milton upon its incorporation in 1662. The Neponset River provided an early foundation for industrial development, with some of New England's earliest mills constructed along its banks. Industries that emerged included a gristmill, gunpowder mill, paper mill, and a chocolate company established in 1764 that operated in the area for approximately two centuries.

By the mid-19th century, Milton transitioned from an agrarian and industrial town into a residential suburb for individuals from Boston, who constructed large estates and mansions, many of which remain today. The development of the Old Colony Railroad, with stations at Milton Village and Central Avenue, facilitated commuting to Boston and contributed to the town's population growth.

The early 20th century saw Milton shift away from its industrial origins as manufacturing, including textiles, declined in the 1920s. When rapid transit arrived in 1929, Milton became a popular residential area for Boston commuters. By the late 20th century, its economy centered on services and small businesses for residents, remaining largely residential and avoiding the high-tech and medical growth seen elsewhere in Massachusetts.
