Maynard, Massachusetts, originally Assabet Village, was first inhabited by the Nipmuc people before Puritan settlers arrived in the 1650s. Established as a town in 1871 and named after Amory Maynard, who had earlier acquired water rights on the river to establish the Assabet Woolen Mill. it grew quickly due to immigrants who worked in the that mill.

 

By the mid to late 1800s, Maynard was known as a "mill town," with its economy driven by the mill and its workforce. Other businesses like the American Powder Mills and Finnish cooperative societies also supported local employment.

 

The Assabet Woolen Mill declined during the 1920s and closed in 1950, leaving over a thousand jobs lost and its vast complex vacant. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) later leased the empty space, helping to revive Maynard as it became a global leader in the computer industry, inventing modern minicomputer technology.

Maynard has evolved into a lively center for technology, small businesses, and the arts, all while maintaining its historic mill-town character. Innovation, community cooperation, and creative adaptation of its industrial history play key roles in shaping the town’s economy.
