Lynn, Massachusetts, established in 1629 and renamed from Saugus to Lynn in 1637, became officially incorporated much later in 1850. It evolved from a colonial settlement to an industrial city, known for tanning, leatherworking, and later shoemaking. By the late 1700s, Lynn was a major shoe producer, supplying boots to the Continental Army engaged in the Revolutionary War.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Lynn was known as the “City of Firsts” thanks to its innovative achievements, including hosting the first American jet engine factory and introducing one of the country's earliest electric streetcar systems. The Thomson-Houston Electric Company started in Lynn and eventually became part of the General Electric Company (GE) through a merger. GE’s facility in Lynn grew into an important industrial hub, manufacturing electrical devices and later focusing on aircraft electrical systems and jet engines, especially during and after World War II. Today, GE Aviation continues to be a key employer in Lynn.

By the 21st century manufacturing in the city has declined, but community efforts have sparked economic revitalization. Groups like the Economic and Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC) and Lynn Main Streets created cultural initiatives, including the Lynn Arts District. Since 2017, Beyond Walls has commissioned numerous murals by local and international artists on downtown buildings.
