Incorporated in 1866, Hudson was transitioning from an agricultural area to a thriving industrial town with modern factories of the era. Like many cities and towns west of Boston, the expansion of the railroads had a tremendous impact on the economic and population growth in the 19th century. In fact, at one point Hudson had two trains stations facilitating the expansion to as many as 17 shoe factories at the peak.

By the mid-2010s, Hudson had become primarily residential, with many industries and businesses closing. The local community along with Hudson Economic Development Commission revitalized the area, leading to a vibrant downtown with restaurants, shops, cafés, and the Assabet River Rail Trail. In 2021, it was awarded “America’s Best Mainstreet.”
