Holliston, Massachusetts, settled in 1659 and incorporated in 1724 after separating from Sherborn, began as an agricultural community focused on dairy farming and orchards. Livestock farming, including cattle and pigs, was a feature of the landscape, and family farms like the Brooks farm were well-established.

 

In the 19th century, its shoe manufacturing industry thrived, making it a major U.S. producer with many factories along Water Street. By the 1920s, competition and the Great Depression led to manufacturing decline, and former factories were repurposed as artists' studios. After World War II, Holliston shifted toward residential development as the Boston metropolitan area expanded. The city has become an attractive location for commuters due to its access to the new Route 128 and Route 495 technology belts.

Holliston, like many other Boston suburbs, adopted zoning policies that, while helping to protect historic areas and open spaces, also enabled controlled residential growth. Over 20% of the town became permanently protected open space, preserving its scenic and rural character even as it suburbanized.
