What to Know About Massachusetts Master Electricians

A Master Electrician (Certificate A) in Massachusetts has more expertise and legal authority than a journeyman. While journeymen handle wiring and repairs, only Master Electricians can run electrical businesses, pull the necessary permits, and assume legal responsibility for work. Their status shows experience, troubleshooting ability, and strong knowledge of codes and local requirements.

How Electricians Become Licensed Masters

To reach the rank of Master Electrician in the Commonwealth, a professional must navigate a multi-year path regulated by the Board of State Examiners of Electricians. As of 2026, the standard requirements include the following:

  • Journeyman Prerequisite: The candidate must already hold a valid Massachusetts Journeyman (Certificate B) license.

  • Experience: They must document at least one additional year of work experience specifically as a licensed journeyman. (This is on top of the 8,000 hours/4 years required to become a journeyman).

  • Education: Completion of 150 clock hours of Board-approved "Master level" classroom instruction.10 This curriculum focuses heavily on advanced theory, business law, and the specific Massachusetts amendments to the electrical code.

  • The Master's Exam: Candidates must pass a rigorous two-part state examination:

    • Part I (Trade): Covers advanced electrical calculations and the NEC.

    • Part II (Business/Law): Focuses on the legalities of running a business, insurance requirements, and workers' compensation.

What Makes Master Electricians Better For You

Massachusetts requires electrician license holders to be master electricians to ensure competent professionals handle electrical work. The Board of State Examiners of Electricians enforces safety standards and regulations to protect the public. Master electricians possess the experience to supervise projects, uphold the Massachusetts Electrical Code, and manage businesses or teams, supporting industry growth in the state.

  • Liability Insurance: Unlike journeymen, Master Electricians operating as contractors must typically maintain specific insurance and, in some cases, a surety bond to protect the consumer.

  • Deep Knowledge of Home Safety: From certification and experience, they have a better working understanding of electrocution hazards and the proper installation and maintenance of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) outdoors, in bathrooms, kitchens, or in any location where electrical appliances or products come in contact with water.

  • Up to Date with Modern Electrical Codes and Code Changes: To renew a Massachusetts electrician’s license, 21 hours of continuing education are required every three years—15 hours on Massachusetts Electrical Code updates and 6 hours on safety, business, and technology topics.
