Dedham, Massachusetts, settled by English colonists in 1635 and incorporated in 1636, was named after Dedham in Essex, England. Colonists aimed to build a Christian community, and the town quickly became known for its innovations. In 1639, settlers constructed Mother Brook, North America's first man-made canal, connecting the Charles and Neponset Rivers and powering local mills—a milestone that spurred Dedham’s industrial growth.

Dedham's industry peaked in the 19th century due to its location and Mother Brook's power source. Manufacturing centered on textiles, paper, machinery, and goods like brushes and leather. By 1845, over 650 workers produced a variety of products. The construction of major roads like the Norfolk and Bristol Turnpike (connecting Boston to Providence) and the arrival of railroads in the 1830s and 1840s—connecting Dedham to Boston and other regional centers—solidified its role as a transportation and commercial hub.

 

Dedham's economy changed in the 20th century as manufacturing declined, and many mills closed due to Southern competition and the loss of regional rail. The town became a bedroom community for Boston professionals, with wealthier residents settling in the west. Today, Dedham relies mainly on services, retail (such as Legacy Place), government functions as county seat, and some light manufacturing. The city participates in the Metropolitan Area Planning Council having created the Designing Dedham 2030 master plan.
