Brookline was incorporated in 1705 and has grown as the metropolitan area expanded. Early wagon and train routes passed through Brookline. Facilitated by this transportation, by the mid-1800s the city rapidly grew, expanding from the commercial center. The city established the first suburban Park Board and created "garden suburbs" to limit commercial development.

 

By 1920, Brookline built the first US indoor curling rink. Today, the city attracts leading healthcare technology organizations and other professional and technical services, with over half of its employment tied to these sectors. By 2023, the city’s population was estimated to be approximately 63,000 people. The Brookline Economic Advisory Board currently has 12 members that study opportunities and present models and plans for the future of the city.
